Windy Run & Happy Hour with Friends

Windy Run
Today started off cloudy and cool, but then the sun started to show itself and the temps started moving in the right direction (for me that would be warmer of course). I set out for my long run of the week around 10:20 or so. It was looking to be a pretty day. Not too hot, not too cold.

I did start off with my handy dandy running sleeves, but rolled those suckers down by mile 3 - right before seeing a family of deer dart across the path. Not seeing rabbits on my runs, but the deer make me smile just the same. Around mile 3.5 I made a left turn and was slammed in the face by wind. It literally felt like I had stopped running forward. A few curse words might have slipped out.

Other than the run-in-place winds, I was feeling pretty good. My sciatica was only bothering me off and on. My calves were pretty tight from running yesterday as well though. I made a different loop trying to get the wind at my back for a bit, but I swear it just kept changing directions at that point. I stopped to refill my water and take a GU around 6 miles into the run.

Everything was good until mile 7.5 when I had to finish out the last stretch all in the head winds. It was brutal. When you feel like you're pushing hard but don't feel like you're moving fast, it starts to get to you mentally. I was definitely not smiling at this point. But I had no choice, I had 1.5 miles left to go, so I just did it. Overall, pretty good run. I definitely had to fight a bit for it though.

Hair Cut & Happy Hour
I got home and did my typical rolling and stretching routine before getting myself cleaned up. Next on tap was a hair cut. WAY over due mind you. Jason tagged along because we had plans after the salon visit. Since I do have short hair, it never takes more than 40 minutes tops.

He decided to walk next door to an outdoorsy type of store. I knew he'd not come back empty-handed of course. He informed me he found a kayak and camping gear he'd like. Oh, right, sure thing. And bought himself some Merrell minimalist shoes. He's been obsessed with minimalist shoes recently. He of course throws out, "never enough shoes, right?" making fun of me and my recent nail polish color. Humph.

We met up with some friends for a drink and snacks at Canon Grill. They have happy hour all day Saturday (hello $2 Blue Moon, which I crave after longer runs). I had already eaten lunch, but Jason hadn't. So he ended up having a quesadilla.

Of course, this means he won't want much for dinner tonight. I had planned on pizza (we had chili last night). So now I don't know what we'll have. I may end up having to have leftovers because I know I'll be hungry long before he is.

Daily To-Enjoy List:
  • Run
  • Hair cut
  • Time with friends
  • Relaxing evening

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
