Balancing Out the Busy

To say that it was a busy, hectic weekend is kind of an understatement. But, we've had lots of very low-key weekends recently, so I can't really complain. Plus, we did have lots of fun.

Friday night we had a party to go to. It was on the other side of town, and one of my more favorite restaurants - Ya Ya's Bistro - happened to be on the way. I think that was just fate saying we needed to stop in for a happy hour drink. So we did.

Our friends met up with us as well since they were going to the same shindig. Ya Ya's had an amazing Pumpkin Pie Martini, very similar to one my sister and I concocted a few years back that I called Pumpkin Pie Bliss. I figured since I was still celebrating my Birthday Week, I could splurge.

Saturday morning I got up to get in my long run for the week. It was cold, windy and rather dreary. Amy and I ran for about 2.5 miles together so that helped. She had started her run much earlier, so I finished the rest of my miles solo.

I know it's totally irrational, but I was really starting to get flat out angry with the wind. And when I didn't think the wind could be worse, it started to rain on me. But, I stuck it out (have I mentioned that I'm stubborn) and got in my 11 miles.

Next up was a trip to our hometown. My dad was having our Thanksgiving lunch early.


It was a great afternoon with family, of course. We laughed, we ate, we laughed some more. My niece braided Sarah's hair. Jason, my dad and my nephew played football. Well, dad and Jason did, C mostly stood around giggling.

After we got back, we didn't have much time until our next event. My friend Amy was having people over. Luckily, we could just walk over there, so no stress about being late.
I made Sarena's amazingly fantastic flatbread recipe adding in kalamata olives and basil and topped with caramelized onions and daiya. Such a super simple but super flavorful recipe.

I was so completely wiped out after being so busy, that I slept until 8 on Sunday. Even better, I felt zero guilt about sleeping in. And if Maddie hadn't started to demand breakfast, then I might have stayed in bed even longer.

Our temps took a huge nose dive. Sunday's high was barely 35 degrees with windchills in the 20's. Because it was cold, this meant I could procrastinate on my run. I did a few house chores before finally deciding it was time to brave the cold and the wind. I swear the wind gods have been against me.

When I set out, the windchill was 17 degrees. Definitely my coldest run so far this year. It's crazy, we had such a mild winter last year that I forgot how it even felt to run in that temp. Of course my core warmed up quickly, but my fact was frozen the entire time. I am pretty sure I have wind burn now after 2 days of cold, windy runs. But, I managed to get in a really nice 7-mile run despite the weather.

Thankfully, Sunday balanced out the other half of the weekend in that it was much more low-key. I did have to go get groceries, but it was fairly uneventful. I made some homemade ciabatta bread, more spaghetti sauce and pressed out tofu for the week.

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
