Having Something to Look Forward to

Happy Tuesday! Today's definitely a happy day for me, much better than yesterday. I got in a pretty good 7-mile run this morning with Amy. But man, summer has hit full force. It was already 73 degrees with 90% humidity well before 7 am. Let's just say we both looked as if we'd gone swimming rather than running. I could literally wring out my shorts. Ick.

While I do love summer, it does not agree with me for running. I'm finding my pace slowing drastically and the runs are just getting more and more challenging. It's kind of frustrating considering how much progress I have made over the last several months. I know this is fairly typical for most runners, or I think it is. But it's definitely a shot to the old ego.

Does anyone else go through this during the summer - a rapid decline in your capabilities? Speed? And the fact that it feels twice as hard as it should?

Of course, it probably didn't help that Jason and I have gone out on the bikes the past two days. Sunday we did 20 miles, yesterday we got in a little over 15. The good news is that I was more comfortable with both rides. I am learning to take curves better (not huge, widely sweeping arcs) and I've been able to pick up my cadence as well.

I do still get a little panicky right at the start or if I have to pass people. I just don't feel totally confident in my stopping abilities or my control over all. And yesterday was not just hot, but crazy gusting winds. There were times when I thought the wind was just going to topple me.

But the best part of the day had nothing to do with working out. My dad drove up for a visit and I took part of the day off to spend some quality time with him. He only lives an hour away, but sometimes that hour may as well be 5 or 6. It's just enough time where you really have to plan it out. It's not easy to just swing by after work for a visit or dinner. So to get to see him during the week made me one happy daughter.

We didn't have any extravagant plans. It was just about spending time together, catching up. We enjoyed a late lunch together at Jason's Deli. It's honestly been at least 10 years since I've eaten at a Jason's Deli. But they do have one heck of a salad bar! I loaded up my bowl with just about everything I could pile on from beets to edamame and then some.

I feel like I've been all over the place recently with my mood. Definitely had some cry-at-the-drop-of-a-hat moments, just randomly. But having some bright spots to look forward to like a ride with the hubby, run with a good friend, and most definitely lunch with your dad certainly helps.

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
