I Love Running and Morning Sunrises

Angela at Happy Fit Mama had a great post this morning about the why she loves running. One of the reasons on her list was a morning sunrise. I always relish the sunrises when I go out for a morning run and am disappointed if it's overcast and I don't get to see one. There's just something so completely serene about the sun rising up in the east. It's like seeing a smile.

This morning, I woke up around 5:30 to get in a run. Part of me was wishing I hadn't made plans to run so early. It was dark and cold and I had been snoozing soundly when the alarm went off.

But I had made plans. Jason and I were going to start the run together, then I was meeting my friend somewhere around 2 miles into the run. No backing out. While the first mile was up hill and seemed to go on forever (the hill that is), once I got moving, I was glad to be out there.

I saw a bunny (Jess/Jo) and I knew it was going to be a good run. The sky began to get lighter, slowly but surely. My friend and I fell into a really nice pace. I realized it wasn't nearly as cold or as dark, it was refreshing, awakening.

Other than a run in with a honking, hissing goose that tried to chase us (Jason saved us by flapping his arms and chasing after it, what a sight I'm sure), it was simply perfect.

But back to Angela's post - here are my 10 reasons why I love running.

  1. Me time - when running solo. Time to reflect or simply be present in the moment with no other cares. Being present but also detached at the same time.

  2. It makes me feel truly alive - the wind, sun, pavement beneath my feet, sound of my breath. The cold, the hot, the sweat, even the pain.

  3. Good conversation - when running with A or Jason, I can always count on good conversations even if sometimes totally random. Usually lots of laughing and antics when A and I run.

  4. It clears my head. Plain and simple.

  5. Sunrises - the peacefulness of the morning.

  6. Endorphines - of course.

  7. I feel accomplished - no matter how hard the run is, I did it. I accomplished something and didn't back down.

  8. Finding the rhythm of my own breath and footfalls - it can be quite relaxing.

  9. De-stressig - sometimes a good midday or afternoon run is all I need to let the stresses of the day fall behind me.

  10. Because I can.
If you run - what are your reasons? If you lift, bake, bike, walk...what are the reasons for doing what you love?

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
