Kick Butt Workout & Dinner with Friends

Weights & Tabata
Today was a gym day for me. I started with 20 minutes on the elliptical (but the treadmills were calling to me sadly). Then I hit the weights for biceps, back, triceps. I went with 3 sets of 8 reps unless noted then followed up the weights with a tabata session.

TS#1
Barbell curls (with EZ bar) - 6 reps
Pullovers
Double-arm overhead triceps extensions

TS#2
Hammer curls (increased weight)
Wide-grip assisted chinups (struggled with these today)
Weighted triceps dips (increased weights)

TS#3
Incline curls (increased weight for half the reps of each set)
Single-arm row
Triceps pulldowns

Tabata - 20 seconds each exercise with 10 seconds rest. Rest 1 minute between circuit. Repeated 3 times
Plie jacks
Speed skaters
Kettlebell swints
Tuck jumps
Lateral hops
Kettlebell figure 8's

Um, yowzer on the HIIT/Tabata workout. I have sooooo lost any of my quick burst endurance. Let me run for 10 miles and I'm good. But short back-to-back bursts kicked my butt. Of course, in a good way. I need to shake things up a bit so I think I'll try to add in more HIIT sessions like this one. It was also fun using the kettlebell, which I never use.

Piddling & Pizza
After the workout, Jason and I hit the grocery store. So much excitement for Saturday right ;-) He finished watching a basketball game, then we headed out for a trip to Target then to clean my filthy dirty car then piddled at an antique shop for a bit.

I did score some clearanced curtains at Target at least. I am planning on doing some easy faux Roman shades in the kitchen. I was happy to find some curtains I could use for under 7 bucks a panel. We also found some new knobs and drawer pulls for the kitchen. Planning to pain the cabinets white, so the oil-rubbed bronze hardware we picked up will look great (we hope).

We were meeting some friends for an early dinner around 5 at a small pizza joint called Pizza Cafe. They have really good pizzas and salads and an awesome outdoor deck area. It's rare that we go there in the winter, because we typically think of going just to enjoy the patio. Must remember this place more often though. Especially with my sis because they now have a gluten-free pizza crust.

As always, we had an enjoyable time with our friends. Just chitchatting and enjoying some good eats. It's hard to beat that sometimes. Simplicity is the way to go if you ask me. Just good food, good friends.

The rest of the evening is being spent pretty lazily. We're just chilling out - I think that's the perfect way to top off a Saturday. I hope you all are having a great weekend.

Daily To-Enjoy List:
  • Sunshine
  • Weight workout
  • Time with friends
  • Relaxing

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
