Double Workout - Legs and Yard Work

Leg Day
Today was dedicated to legs. I hit the gym around 10 - oh so quiet up there. Kind of creepy to have the whole gym to yourself actually. Anyway, I started with 10 minutes on the elliptical to warm up then did the following as 3x8 unless noted:

Squats - warmup set of 12

Squats - 4x8 (lowered weight by #5 on last set)
Stiff-leg dead lifts
Plie squats
Deadlifts
Single-leg squats
Walking lunges
Calf raises - 3x15
Alternating side lunges - 2x8

I finished off with another 10 minutes on the elliptical. At the time, I felt like I was working really hard and expected to have major wobbly legs. But really the only thing I'm feeling is a bit in the hamstrings and no quads at all. Probably not a terrible thing as I do need to work on the hams.

I did realize today that I desperately need some different music for lifting vs running. For one thing, the playlist gets old really quickly when that's all you listen to pretty much 6 days a week. Also, with lifting, I like more aggressive music, and that's not what I have going at all. Suggestions? What types of music do you like for lifting vs running?

Yard Work
After the workout, I got home and cleaned up and did a few loads of laundry and piddled until Jason got back from another ride. As a procrastination tactic, we hit a patio for lunch before hitting up Home Depot for all the yard "stuff" we needed. It was another hot one and extremely windy, but the patio we chose was nicely shaded and it felt great.

I am happy to report that I finally have plants in my garden. Right now we have Roma tomatoes, red and green bell peppers, 2 types of hot peppers and 1 sweet pepper, plus the asparagus we planted 3 years ago. Oh, also got sweet potatoes. We go through enough to warrant planting our own. When the Japanese eggplants are finally in season, we'll plant those as well.

I also filled up another large planter and two planters in the house. I managed to get quite a bit of weeding done in the back yard. The front yard is just in sad sad shape. Maybe I can get out there this week and start to whittle away at those weeds. At least some of the plants I transplanted from my great-grandmother's property are finally established and are blooming like mad - mainly the irises and the creeping phlox. So there is some color happening among the weeds and dead leaves that never got raked...

Jason just finished mowing the yard. Not really sure what we'll do for dinner. That little errand didn't happen today, so we'll have to start getting creative until we can hit the store.

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
